Astoria is a port city founded in 1811.  It is the oldest city in the state of Oregon and was the first American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains.

The county is the northwest corner of Oregon, and Astoria is located on the south shore of the Columbia River, where the river flows into the Pacific Ocean. The city is named for John Jacob Astor, an investor and entrepreneur from New York City, whose American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria at the site and established a monopoly in the fur trade in the early nineteenth century. Astoria was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 20, 
1876.

Parker Landing is surrounded by Young's Bay and Young's River:  Youngs Bay is a body of water just west of Astoria, Oregon, and east of the communities of Warrenton and Hammond. It receives the waters of Youngs River and the Lewis and Clark River. Youngs Bay is surrounded by Astoria, Oregon, Coxcomb Hill and the Astoria Column, and Saddle Mountain. Youngs Bay is crossed by U.S. Highway-101 (Highway-26), from which there are good views of the Coast Range, Saddle Mountain, and Astoria, Oregon.

The Mermaids Song Beach House sits on a quiet street where the ocean and the river meet.  We are less than a full block from the beach with two access areas and nestled between the BEST clamming, crabbing and fishing location.  

It's a quiet area away from the bustling crowds in summer, but still so close to everything Seaside has to offer.  Just a short stroll or bike ride to the prom.   It's perfect for feeling like you have a private beach and the Mermaid's vibe is SUPREME!   

She seems petite but she holds in her lair a 4 bedroom, 1.5 bathrooms, 1 block from the Ocean and 1 block from the River, where the two meet (Estuary), in Seaside Oregon.

With an array of sleeping arrangements and the ability to separate adults and children, cozy up to the fire or just sit on the front porch with a book as the kids play corn hole on the lawn.   Watch the sunset in all it's beautiful glow.  Take the wagon and head a short block to the beach with the many sand toys and equipment.  Meander around on our bikes...whatever you like!

Just a  few short blocks away there is a  City Park across from the 12th street bridge, where you can try your luck with our crab cages or rent a bike fit for the entire family or start your stroll on the prom.

The Necanicum  River comes in and out with the tide, which is perfect for fishing, kayaking, clamming or beach combing.  Walk to the prom, shop the outlets, take a short drive to Astoria, Cannon Beach or Manzanita.

Try you luck fishing for salmon in the Necanicum behind the house, down 17th street and you run right into the Estuary ...maybe even spot some local ELK.

Three of the four bedrooms (Two Queen, 1 (Double) Twin) are on the lower level with two full bathrooms, a dedicated office space and laundry room.  The lower level deck has a sunken hot tub and seating.  There are pine floors throughout.  

Upstairs there is a beautiful kitchen filled with all the essential amenities, cookware and stainless steel appliances, dining room, family room and half bathroom.   The patio doors open to a deck with patio furniture and fire table as well as on the front covered upper porch with adirondack chairs 
 
The King master suite is also on the 2nd floor with it's own full bathroom equipped with clawfoot soaking tub, double sinks and full shower.  

Gearhart has small town charm and hospitality. It has no traffic lights, wide streets for riding bicycles, public tennis courts, and a gorgeous, unspoiled beach. The center of town is charming, with shops, restaurants, an art gallery, a grocer, and lodging in a renovated boutique inn. The Gearhart Golf Links is the oldest golf course in the Pacific Northwest, and lies just minutes from the water.

Elk, bear, deer and many species of birds
are found in this unique coastal setting.  Parts of Cape Meares and nearby Three Arch Rocks are National Wildlife Refuges. From April through
July, the steep cliffs and offshore rocks are nesting sites for thousands of seabirds, including common murres, pelagic and Brandt’s cormorants and pigeon guillemots. Peregrine falcons occasionally nest on the
cliffs in the spring.

Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint is a prime location for whale watching. Migrating whales may be seen from December to January as they head south to calving grounds in Mexico and again March to April as they head north to Alaska. Volunteers help visitors spot whales during designated whale watching weeks in December and March.  A population of about 200–400 whales feeds along the Oregon coast throughout the summer.  Other marine mammals such as sea lions, dolphins
and porpoise may be seen from Cape Meares’ excellent viewpoints.

Manzanita is an oceanside village tucked in between three distinctive landmarks: the vast Pacific Ocean, the large coastal headland at Neahkahnie Mountain, and the sheltered Nehalem Bay. One of three communities ringing Nehalem Bay, Manzanita is close in driving distance to the towns of Nehalem and Wheeler. The bay boasts excellent fishing spots, with great catches of Chinook salmon, sturgeon, and steelhead trout, as well as crabbing and clam-digging at low tide. Manzanita is scenic, and originally drew interest from Portland tourists for its turquoise surf, striking exposed cliffs, and dreamlike, hazy horizons. Retreat homes line the beach and nautically-named streets end in paths to the ocean.

Falcon Creek Retreat

The next time you hike to the top of Neahkahnie Mountain, you might contemplate the treasure legend has it is buried somewhere along the way.

You certainly wouldn’t be the first to do so. Over the last 100-plus years, many have taken to the mountain armed with maps and shovels in search of the lost fortune. In the 1930s, two men died while excavating a portion of the mountain after their makeshift mine caved in on them.

It all started with a story passed along from the Nehalem tribe to the Nehalem Bay area’s early white settlers. According to the tale, a group of sailors, believed by many to be 16th century Spaniards, arrived on a ship and carried a chest to the top of the mountain. Then the men dug a hole and placed the chest inside before slaying what modern people believe was an African slave with a sword, laying him on top of the chest and covering it with earth. Nehalem oral history tradition maintains the men killed the slave and buried him with the treasure to frighten anyone who might be tempted to tamper with it.

Several centuries later, the local pioneers remarked on the hospitality of the Nehalems, who were not only accustomed to the sight of approaching ship sails, but who were happy to trade the beeswax they found, most likely the byproduct of a wrecked Spanish cargo ship that historians believe ran aground on Nehalem Spit around 1700, for more exotic goods.

By the early 1900s, white settlers had begun looking at Manzanita as a potential resort for Portland’s leisure class. Sam Reed, for whom Neahkahnie’s Reed Road is named, founded the area’s first oceanfront hotel and drinking establishment, the Neahkahnie Tavern and Inn.

Those having a drink at the tavern would have enjoyed a clear view of the wreck of the Glenesslin, a British ship that ran aground on the rocks below Neahkahnie Mountain in 1913. It was generally believed the crew steered the ship to its demise deliberately in hopes of cashing in on an insurance policy and replacing the steam-powered relic with a new vessel.

By 1914, real estate agents were touting Manzanita and Neahkahnie as “the Carmel of the North.”

Portlanders visited Manzanita by train, disembarking in Mohler and then hopping a stage car to the beach. Once they arrived, they had their choice of hotels or tent camping. For those who wanted to check the wind conditions at the shoreline before changing into their swimming attire, there was a “robery,” or dressing room, on the beach.

The nearby communities of Nehalem and Wheeler were far more working class, with both serving as home to fish cannery employees, loggers and millworkers, among other laborers. For many years, Nehalem and Wheeler enjoyed economic boom times, thanks to the lumber, fishing and dairy industries.

Our local and active history archive is the Nehalem Valley Historical Society or NVHS.

Charming Hideaway Overlooking The Astoria Waters

The Youngs River was originally discovered by Lieutenant William Broughton of the Vancouver Expedition in 1792, who named it in honor of Admiral Sir George Young of the Royal Navy. It would be another fourteen years before the spectacular Youngs River Falls would be discovered by Sergeant Patrick Gass, a member of Lewis and Clark&rsquo;s Corps of Discovery. On March 1, 1806, Gass noted the discovery in his journal, saying:

Located just ten miles south of the city of Astoria, Oregon, Youngs River Falls is a popular summer recreation spot for swimming. Here, the warm waters of the Youngs River tumble over a rocky 54-foot drop to a pool below, the deepest point of which is between five to seven feet and surrounded by dense forest. From the parking lot, a short 0.25-mile trail leads downhill from the parking lot to the base of the waterfall. The waterfall can also be seen from the parking lot.

Astoria is that little town that could, a city of 10,000 people on the Columbia River, just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. Founded 200 years ago at the beginning of Oregon’s North Coast, Astoria has been through boom and bust times more than once, weathering the collapse of both the Columbia River fishery and Oregon timber industry. It has risen once again as a cultural haven, often referred to as “little San Francisco.” Astoria is an old place that is newly hip. Astoria is a port city founded in 1811.  It is the oldest city in the state of Oregon and was the first American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains.

The county is the northwest corner of Oregon, and Astoria is located on the south shore of the Columbia River, where the river flows into the Pacific Ocean. The city is named for John Jacob Astor, an investor and entrepreneur from New York City, whose American Fur Company founded Fort Astoria at the site and established a monopoly in the fur trade in the early nineteenth century. Astoria was incorporated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on October 20, 1876.

Youngs Bay is crossed by U.S. Highway-101 (Highway-26), from which there are good views of the Coast Range, Saddle Mountain, and Astoria, Oregon.
